The Shipibo Konibo

The Shipibo Konibo are the original inhabitants of the Ucayali River basin in the Peruvian Amazon. For millennia prior to European contact, we lived in communities sustained by the rich offerings of the waterways and the surrounding forests. Since the mid 19th century, the Shipibo Konibo have been displaced from our ancestral lands resulting in the loss of our ability to sustain ourselves due to deforestation, relocation, over fishing, and forced entry into the money economy.

The existence and future of the Shipibo Konibo are threatened by environmental challenges, the diminishing transmission of ancestral knowledge to younger generations, appropriation of our medicinal tradition, and unique designs by increased foreign interests, and the persistent need for economic sovereignty. Inin Rabi invites you to support our efforts to protect our cultural identity, and create opportunities to recover autonomy.
